When I was a few months into redundancy, I started to imagine ‘what if I have won the lotto’ what would I do with my life. Well most people have the notion that they would buy houses in exotic locations and give up work. But what I actually mean, is imagine you could have your ideal work, if money was no object what would you do with your life?
So that started me thinking about huge possibilities, then the next step is to imagine you have no money, yes it was a cruel trick, you havent won the lottery, you are just you with a dream.
I found that hugely helpful as I tended to think of what I wanted to do if I was a millionaire, but you know what? Dreams are the same size, whether you have money or not.
Look at me, I am now an employed journalist and I have had features published in two national papers – thats huge. Now I am one day away from handed in my Thesis in my MA in writing, and I am nearly finished co-writing a play with Jackie.
I have been thinking about continuing studying after my masters, and a few days ago I saw a great course at Windmill Lane Studios, where over 5 intensive days, I will write a short screen play, get it made, have a show reel and enter my short movie in International Film Festivals.
Anyway I thought it was just pie in the sky, but when I was talking to my boss, I discovered there is ‘training money’ allocated for each person and tentatively, yes tentatively it looks like I will be able to get on the course!!!
I will be networking with film makers in Ireland, getting my short film into independent film festivals and embark on what it turns out I am really good at – writing screenplays 🙂
So when I start my short course, you never know who will be recording in the studio – Lady Gaga, Snow Patrol or U2?
