When I was in ‘the big job’ we never had an open fire, just the gas heating as it was handy and cheap. Now that energy costs have gone mad, a neighbour last year organised for us to get our first trailer load of turf – and we were hooked!
This year with the ridiculous ban on turf cutting on loads of bogs, coupled with the wet summer, the price of turf more than doubled. Luckily another neighbour has organised for a lorry load of turf to be delivered and four of us are splitting the cost. The turf is arriving this thursday and as a luck penny the turf man gave us a few bags of turf to bring home yesterday.
So last night we had the first turf fire of the winter, and the kids, Rex and two cats lay toasty in front of it. Up to last year the kids didn’t know what turf was, now they absolutely love the smell of it as it permeates the house and they relaxed in front of it reading.
Another positive is my kids becoming that bit more Irish and loving the smell and heat and comfort of the turf fire.
