Today is a Birthday in our house. And what a year it has been for Robert, he had a close call on his health a few days before his birthday last year, and then lost his job for over a year. However, as you know he recently got a permanent job – so this birthday is truly cause for celebration.
Now in ye olde corporate world I was a fan of Tesco bought cakes, which were okay when the kids were small, and they either loved Bob the Builder or Barbie – did I tell you I have two boys 🙂
But now as I have become a domestic goddess, the stakes have increased in the old post redundancy world of catering. Now you can check my recycling bin – nothing in there from Tesco Finest, nor Superquinn!
Now I have time to bake – we have mini quiches, home cooked cocktail sausages, my deluxe birthday cake, and a small but perfectly arranged selection of tasty delights.
But it doesn’t stop there. I now have home printed banners on the front windows, mini-bunting in the kitchen and little tea lights delicately placed.
Thirty years ago, yes thirty years ago – while still at secondary school my oldest sister had her 21st Party in my parents house. At 13 I thought it was super cool to be part of it. That is until the mobile disco she had hired, blew the lights and we lit candles while we were waiting for the electrician to arrive. At 13 its important to lean, coolly against walls, doors, never stand upright, always slouch against something and be über cool. Well that worked until I leaned back against the fireplace and rested against the wall, and my hair touched the lit candle. I lost 6 inches of hair in as many seconds. It was half way down my back when it caught fire, it burnt my school blouse and my school jumper. I was rushed to my neighbour who had been a hairdresser in her youth, and she managed to try to fix my hair. God bless her but ‘style’ would be too strong an adjective!
Anyway – next day at school, I had no jumper, and had borrowed a blouse – I suddenly became Miss Popularity – I had been at a 21st party on a school night!! AND had a near death experience and managed to have a ‘make-over’ as well!
I promise tonight I will keep the tea light under close supervision, as I don’t know where I could find a hairdresser at short notice on a friday night?
