Redundancy Positive # 8 Time

I remember it like a bad dream that won’t go away. Himself used to have a food business and I would often help out. I am kind of handy in the kitchen in a pastry kind of way. Not in a cleaning up, emptying the dishwasher kind of way – but I can rustle up a mean spinach and ricotta Quiche. I remember coming down the stairs at 9pm on a wet Tuesday night and there was a Farmers Market in the IFSC in Dublin (International Financial Services Centre). So that meant himself had been in his commercial kitchen all day making 200 Cornish Pasties. As I looked at the clock, got on my apron and
turned on the oven – I thought there has to be more to life than this. I sat down at 12.30 with the Quiche gleaming on the table- the kitchen looked like we had survived a bomb attack.

I drank the rest of my tea and walked over to my laptop and
fired it up. I had a meeting with Newstalk Radio Station in the morning at 10am. It was with their FD and my boss would also be attending. As I started to type into Powerpoint, I lost myself in annual telecoms savings.

I fell into bed at 2am and awoke at 7am –got the kids dressed, got them breakfast propped up in front of SpongeBob SquarePants. I then ran upstairs – showered, got the suit on – and noticed the hem on one trouser leg was down. Ran downstairs got the ironing board up – found the ‘wunda web’ and ironed the offending trouser leg. Suit successfully on, lunches made – I cajoled everyone out and got all car seats ‘plugged in’.

I then dropped everyone at the child-minders. As I drove into Dublin my boss called ‘You know how key this meeting is with Newstalk Joan? We need this win to bring our team through.
Kate Russell is calling at 11 – to see how we get on. So you’d better deliver on this – right?’

God it’s stressful even to write that, never mind ‘live’ that for close on 5 years. . BC (Before Children) I enjoyed the competitiveness of Corporate Sales. But add two kids under three and get promoted a few times, then add in the death of a parent. See where I am going now?

I am slowly seeing this redundancy as a god-send.

Time to pick up my kids from school; Time to meet other mammies from school; time to do homework; time to bake together; Time to laugh together; Time to find out in detail what is going on their wee world; Time together with himself; Laughing with himself again; Time to look for Bargains; Time to prepare healthy dinners; Time to nip to beautician; Time for me. Just time.
