There are many things that surprised me about redundancy. Mostly this is how many simple – dare I say cheap -pleasures I have discovered since getting the heave-ho. The most surprising is the love-in I am having with IKEA. And ‘yes’ it does deserve those capitals.
I have developed the ‘Redundant Routine’ which has spread covertly over my previously busy weeks. Now monday morning is drop the kids to school and drive to IKEA for breakfast. Don’t panic it is only a fifteen minute drive on the M50 in Dublin – not a 2 hour round trip 🙂
Of course I have a Family Card – gold plated at this stage! They have they have their red 50% wool runner laid out for us at this stage and are ready and smiling with a Daim bar. We can buy a 9 piece breakfast for both myself and himself for €4.50. Yes Dublin is one of the most expensive cities in the world apparently – but hey you heard it here. Obviously we get free tea and coffee with the aforementioned Family card – but could this be beaten for two breakfasts for under €5!!
Of course it costs us on average another €30 after we have bought potted daffodils in cutesy red pots. Or the Billy Bookcases in red for €9 (discount to family cards holders only….na na na na naa na!).
But hey it is still the cheapest breakfast in Dublin or maybe even in Ireland? Anyone? There are now about a dozen white vans parked outside most mondays and bench tables groaning under the weight of hash browns and sausages. I fear our secret is out?
